I can tell you honestly that this was not so fervently discussed on the radio in earlier decades. My suspicion for this is that there was a better understanding in earlier times, before the advent of our rapid increase in new operators, of the conditions under which a “grounding system” would do some good. Lets look at this carefully and critically so that we can assess the desirability of a grounding system for our radio stations. Radio Frequency RF Grounds First of all realize that there are two discreet types of ground systems and reasons why a Ham might desire to provide a “station ground”. These are for the most part mutually exclusive! In other words one does one job for which it is specifically designed, and one does a different job. You must design your grounding system with this in mind, or one function may inhibit or nullify the other! One of these grounding systems is what I will generally describe as a “safety ground”.

When I was a teenager, I used it with my old Realistic stereo receiver to improve its AM reception, and it did work. My dad put it up for me. You might also find it from other electronics suppliers. Find two points, such as two poles NOT utility poles! Any safe places above the ground from which you can string this wire will do. Remember that not just the mounting places, but the “air-space” through which the wire will be strung must be free of obstructions, such as trees, and especially power lines.
Aug 15, · Nathan. This “report”, “Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child”, smacked of the worst kind of tendentiousness, of a pained attempt to manufacture shock and find scandal where none was apparent.
Here are a few things that are important to help prevent this: The rolled edge of the panel that meets the frame should be in an even plane all the way around. In other words, if you lay it on the floor it should sit perfectly flat. If it’s at all “tacoed” then you need to straighten it out. Lambretta side panels can start to fit loosely if they get flattened out. This can make the front lower edge of the panel not sit in the groove.
Gently put a little more bend in the panel down near the bottom edge where it curves in to meet the frame, and it should fit more snugly. Don’t bend it too far or it will kink. Your scoot’s frame may be pushed in at the rear. If so, try pulling it out with a come-along or by putting it on a workbench and wedging a long 2″x4″ between the frame and rear tire and giving it a good yank.
First put a little dish soap inside the buffer, then work the spring through the buffer, starting with the end of the spring which has a right angle at the end. Now put a strip of flexible plastic a 1″ x 4 ” strip cut from an old margarine tub will work great on the front side of the frame where the clip will slide on. Pry the spring open and slide it in position over the strip of plastic.

Our pole-mounted meter. The wires on the left provide power to the meter, the black load wire on the right goes back up the pole and connects to the duplex utility feed or “drop” which connects to the house wiring at the weather head.
Overt vs Covert It is often best to blend in as opposed to standing out. In the city, that might mean driving a white sedan or van. In the bush, it might mean a camouflage or matte earth tone paint job. Other times, looking like you are not worth tangling with might be the better option. Conductive Metal Body For the best EMP-resistance, choose a vehicle with conductive metal body enclosing the engine and passenger compartment or cab over a vehicle with body panels made of fiberglass, plastic or any other non-conductive material.
How to EMP-Harden Your Auto If your vehicle already has these features or you are already doing these things, then you are already part of the way there. No matter which automobile you choose, there is always more that can be done to minimize the effect of HEMP on the vehicle. Ground all conductive components of the vehicle to a single point on the chassis. Do not ground them to the earth.
Park in an EMP-protected garage: Do not connect your vehicle to an unprotected engine oil warmer.

Remove the distributor cap, right valve cover and the 4 cyl rocker arms and pedestal. Set up a dial gauge on the 4 intake push rod. Rotate the engine to TDC 1 cylinder. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is right. If the dial reads thousands, your valve timing is retarded or your chain is streched.

Denatured Alcohol Respirator Powder Coating Gun The powder coating gun serves the purpose of spraying powder and adding an electric charge to the powder so it is attracted to the metal part. Cheaper guns have a pre-selected KV and more expensive guns allow you to choose. If you already have a powder coating gun, read this article make sure you are using the correct spraying techniques. Craftsman Powder Coating System: No Air Compressor needed I will start with the cheapest possible gun to get you coating.
It is the Craftsman Powder Coating System. You can see my full review here: Craftsman Powder Coating System Review The Craftsman gun is the only powder coating gun that does not require an air compressor. If you are interested in this gun because you don’t have a compressor, also see Alternatives to Sandblasting since you would need an air compressor to do any sand blasting.
For the beginner, this Craftsman powder coating gun performs well and is cheap enough to let you know if you would like to pursue powder coating. This was the first gun I bought and I used it to produce a lot of very nice finishes: Powder coating forums will generally look down on it and it has some bad reviews because there is a part on the gun that breaks for even using a feather-lite touch. If you want to try out powder coating without spending much money, don’t worry about that stuff.

Jun 08, · Thanks John this is a significant effort you’ve made to inform us all on this subject. It is in keeping with the many other excellent thread you’ve authored on a variety of subjects.
I started doing some research to determine the correct wire and rod I should use. Now – after “educating myself” I don’t know WTH I am doing – and it seems like even some electricians don’t agree. Some say generator should be grounded separately – some say it should not be because the home is already grounded. Some say you need to make sure the generator neutral and ground wires are not internally connected – if they are this must be separated if hooked to a house.
Let me go through what I have done. I put an interlock on my breaker panel Installed a new 30 AMP breaker and an inlet box I was going to ground the generator using the ground lug on the front of the panel Some web sites say you should NOT ground the generator if it is wired into the home’s electrical system – because the home system is already grounded.
They make it sound like when you use the NEMA L plug to hook directly into the house breaker panel – if you also install a separate grounding wire from the generator grounding lug it could cause an unsafe condition. I am totally lost – how can grounding something – even if it is already grounded – cause a safety issue??
They say – The problem is that many generators bond their neutral and ground together internally. If you also ground the generator it will cause power to back feed through the neutral.
Any GT electricians that understand how to safely hook up a portable generator to a house?

You will also need a length of wire to connect your grounding rod to where you hang your parts. 8 gauge wire is the recommended size as long as you are not running the wire long distances. If you need a long distance run, then it would be best to opt for a larger wire size to reduce resistance.
Jet location on carburetor 18 Jay Smith on the subject of correctly jetting a motor The plugs should be a “paper bag” color to be the ultimate in correct jetting. I don’t read plugs as there are too many varibles involved, I have had good luck only reading the piston itself. I make a high speed pass and if the hull will allow it without back washing over the splash well kill it clean.
Then I roll 5 piston as generally 5 is the hot hole on a Mercury and prone to burn if the mixture is too lean to bottom dead center and look at the piston crown on the intake side that will be the side toward the outside of the block with a bend o lite , the intake side of the piston at the intake port should be wet and look moist about the size of a quarter out toward the middle from the port. If the wettness is over across half of the crown your too rich and can lean down a bit.
If it is dry and ashy in color your too lean and you need to richen up in a hurry. Maybe other people have different methods but this has always been the ticket for me. Some rely on pyros , I have found that when a motor is too lean a pyro will be too late in its report and the piston is already smoked a 2. Also if a pyro is “coked” up” it will also read incorrectly. This is why I haven’t alot of faith in the pyro system of jetting.
They have maybe just a load of 87 octane in the 91 tank. The cushion of 1 to 2 jet size may pull off a couple of HP BUT may save you a piston if the above mentioned thing occures. Also make sure if you have an advancer type timing light it is on 0.
